I’m all for Andrei Gavrilov – he uses the pedals only where needed. This piece
is all about longing ( as well as for closure as for the lightheartedness of spring
as for life as for the resistance against the inevitable). As I have understood – wrote & re-wrote Chopin this piece over a long period of time ( in many different moods & places) and felt deeply unsure about it – while after finishing it – hardly believed he wrote the most impressive balad ever. It’s ( in
my opinion) – in our times – rather shameful the piece had to be exploited in the film The Pianist ; I would have chosen for a piece from Liszt – considering what happenend with Chopin after he finished this amazing balad
